چکیده

Let Φ(N) denote the number of products of matrices [ 1 1 0 1 ] and [ 1 0 1 1 ] of trace equal to N , and Ψ(N) = N n=3 Φ(n) be the number of such products of trace at most N . We prove an asymptotic formula of type Ψ(N) = c1N 2 logN + c2N 2 + Oε(N ) as N → ∞. As a result, the Dirichlet series ∞ n=3 Φ(n)n −s has a meromorphic extension in the half-plane <(s) > 7 4 with a single, order two pole at s = 2. Our estimate also improves on an asymptotic result of Faivre concerning the distribution of reduced quadratic irrationals, providing an explicit upper bound for the error term.

On the Involution of the Real Line Induced by Dyer’s Outer Automorphism of PGL(2,Z)

We study the involution of the real line induced by the outer automorphism of the extended modular group PGL(2,Z). This ‘modular’ involution is discontinuous at rationals but satisfies a surprising collection of functional equations. It preserves the set of real quadratic irrationals mapping them in a non-obvious way to each other. It commutes with the Galois action on real quadratic irrational...

Closed Form Continued Fraction Expansions of Special Quadratic Irrationals

We explore methods for determining the underlying structure of certain classes of continued fractions . The goal is to develop closed form expressions for the continued fractions of many quadratic irrationals. Consider a finite difference equation satisfying: • Gn+1 = anGn + bnGn−1. • an = m, and bn = l for all n, where m, l ∈ N note: m = l = 1 gives the Fibonacci numbers. Let Gn denote the n t...

Cyclic Products of Purely Periodic Irrationals

Let (a0, · · · , ak−1) be a sequence of positive integers and m a positive integer. We prove that “almost every” real quadratic unit ǫ of norm (−1)k admits at leastm distinct factorizations into a product of purely periodic irrationals of the form ǫ = [a0; a1, . . . , ak−1, x, y]× [a1; a2, . . . , x, y, a0] × · · · × [y; a0, . . . , ak−1, x]. Periods exhibited in this expression are not assumed...

Regular Interval Exchange Transformations over a Quadratic Field

We describe a generalization of a result of Boshernitzan and Carroll: an extension of Lagrange’s Theorem on continued fraction expansion of quadratic irrationals to interval exchange transformations. In order to do this, we use a two-sided version of the Rauzy induction. In particular, we show that starting from an interval exchange transformation whose lengths are defined over a quadratic fiel...

Palindromy and Ambiguous Ideals Revisited

The purpose of this article is to revisit the relationship between ambiguous ideals and palindromy in the simple continued fraction expansions of quadratic irrationals begun by the first author and A. J. van der Poorten (1995, Bull. Austral. Math. Soc. 51, 215 233). We present simpler proofs of known results, new interrelationships, and correct some misinterpretations. We do this via the infras...
